FIELDS

In the last weeks we also prepared the fields. We ploughed them and on some of them we planted potatoes. We also planted asparagus, pumpkins and maize. On some fields we did everything for good greenland. At the beginning of May it was a bit too hot and we had too less rain for our agricultural products. But now, beginning of June, it’s just the opposite. That means it is too cold and we have far too much rain. Most of our farmers are waiting for better weather because it’s time for making hay and otherwise the grass is getting too old and the quality of it is getting down. In our practical lessons, when we plant agricultural products, we also learn about the soil. We are introduced in finding out about the condition of the soil. We are checking the nutrients which are needed by the different plants and fruits we are planting. Some of us really like that and find it very interesting! In summer we bring our cows on “alms” – these are alpine pastures. Now, beginning of June, most of us have already all their cattle there. Some of us have an own “alm”, the others have to pay farmers for taking their animal on their alm. But the time on the mountains is very good for the cows. It’s very healthy for them and because of the fresh air, the good wather and the special grass and herbs up there the milk is really special! Much better than the milk from the valley. We even get better paid for it.
